CELEBRATING 31 YEARS AS REAL ESTATE SALESPERSON

Madat Kara began his successful Real Estate career in 1988 after 20 years of being an entrepreneur.  Born in East Africa, Madat attempted his first venture in 1969. He established a profitable retail auto parts business, which later expanded into distribution at a wholesale level. In 1974 Madat moved to Canada, continued in the automotive trade by retail acquiring a franchised rust proofing business, and within a year expanded his portfolio by owning a used car dealership, service garage and a chain of gas stations. He then chose to explore the hospitality industry and subsequently opened a highly successful   new concept’ restaurant that was well known in Toronto.

In 1983, Madat sold his holdings and made his permanent move to Ottawa. Upon arriving he immediately purchased a convenience store which led him to open several more until he eventually had a chain of convenience stores as well as a couple of photo labs and a formal wear store. By 1988, Madat sold his interest in the retail business and made his move into the Real Estate Industry. While building his business, he was involved in the ownership of two very well known Ottawa (O’Tooles) restaurants but eventually focused on his growing Real Estate business.

Currently Madat is owner / shareholder as Landlord for a Strip Plaza in Ottawa, several residential properties and Franchisee of Harvey’s and Swiss Chalet Restaurant in Orleans, Ontario.

Madat’s highly developed management & people skills come because of years of experience and supervision of countless employees, and it is this, which has contributed to his outstanding success in the building of his Real Estate business. October 10, 2013

To whom it may concern,

Madat Kara, salesperson at Royal Lepage Team Realty, Brokerage in Ottawa, Ontario, first learned of Meals on Wheels in January 1998 when, on a business trip in Toronto, he heard a news story about the huge ice storm in Eastern Ontario, more specifically about the elderly and convalescing people of Ottawa who would not be receiving their daily meals due to the weather.  Madat felt so bad after just having finished his own dinner that he knew he had to get involved in some way.  Being a real estate agent, he knew that he and his co-workers were out on the roads in all sorts of bad weather.  He knew that he could help make a difference.  As soon as he got back to Ottawa, Madat contacted Meals on Wheels and volunteered to help.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization, serving meals to individuals who are elderly, disabled or convalescing.  The meals are provided at a nominal cost to the recipients.  This service helps them to remain independent and healthy in their own homes, as each meal provided is nutritionally complete.  The Meals on Wheels delivery also provides a daily visit by a volunteer to each client giving them an opportunity to interact with an interested visitor.

Not long after starting to volunteer as a driver, Madat realized that there weren’t enough government subsidies to fund the program, so he also took on a fundraising role for Meals on Wheels, creating a team and organizing several large-scale functions, which have contributed greatly to the program. Over the last 15 years, his team has hosted events including boat cruises, hockey games, Elvis Gala night dinners and dances.  In 2002, he also raised money by shaving his head on the local evening news.  Some of Madat's team members have been his banker, lawyer, doctor as well as police officers from the Ottawa Police and the OPP, to name a few.

It should be noted that over the years, Madat has contributed a lifetime total of 4,400 hours of volunteer work to our organization!

This year, Madat’s Team’s target is set at $20,000 in order to increase the accumulated donation to $200,000. A number of grant     proposals plus a Hockey Night in Canada event, to be held during the winter of 2014, are slated to raise these funds.

Madat received a certificate presented by The Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, who was Master of Ceremonies at our 40th Anniversary Celebration on April 14th, 2008. He was interviewed that day by Hallie Cotnam, Reporter/Editor, Ottawa Morning, CBC Radio.  You can listen to the interview on U Tube by entering the name Madat Kara or http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=EnxJUkLcztQ for part 1 and for part 2 go to http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=A626i5PP2vQ.

Madat has also received many awards recognizing his efforts including a Rising Star Award “Community Champions” presented by the chairman of The Prudential Foundation from 1999 to 2011, the United Way “community builder Award” “for making a real difference in building a stronger more caring community in 2003, the City of Ottawa civic appreciation award “Humanitarianism” presented by Mayor Bob Chiarelli in 2003, the

“Golden Jubilee Medal” presented by her Majesty the Queen through the Canadian Governor General in 2002, the City of Ottawa Civic Appreciation Award “helping make the city a better place to live in” presented by Mayor Bob Chiarelli in 2002. In February 2012, he was awarded the City Builder Award presented by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

As a result of this fundraising, Meals on Wheels has been able to maintain its fees at a reasonable level and keep  the meals highly                      accessible to all.  This is very important since a very large percentage of the clients are living on a  fixed income.

We’re very lucky at Meals on Wheels to have Madat Kara working so closely with us.   He is a model to others with his perseverance, creativity and graciousness all contributing attributes to our combined successes.  Each new venture undertaken by Madat is done with thought and attention to detail, guaranteeing success every time.  All of his efforts are exceptional because, at the same time, Madat manages a very successful, demanding business and raises his family.  We thank Madat Kara for his enthusiastic support as it has proven to be invaluable to our organization and our clients.

During the past fifteen years, Madat Kara has convinced at least ten other Real Estate agents from his office to volunteer with Meals on Wheels. We congratulate Madat for now being part of Royal Lepage Team Realty.  We appreciate his continuing support and, hopefully support from Royal Lepage Team Realty as well going forward.

If you have any questions about Madat Kara’s projects or about Meals on Wheels, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 613-233-2424 or bau@mealsonwheels-ottawa.org.  Our website address is www.mealsonwheels-ottawa.org.
